Wenge is dark brown to black with fine black veining. it is a coarse-textured wood with a specific gravity just below that of Brazilian rosewood.
Wenge is quite dark under finish as can be seen on the Kyoto on the models page of this website.
Wenge plates have a lively tap tone that is higher in register than woods with a similar density.
I have built two guitars with this material and have been tickled with the results both times.
Wenge guitars are punchy and articulate with a warm tonality. They tend to be very strong in the mids, not unlike Koa, and make great fingerstyle instruments.
